Joe Norris

A mechanical engineer with First Class Honours in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Joe specialises in machine design and structural and mechanical analysis.

 

His experience spans the design, assessment and verification of machinery, equipment and engineered systems operating in demanding industrial environments.

A defining feature of Joe's engineering approach is his ability to look beyond the immediate technical problem and understand the broader system around it.

 

He is particularly effective at identifying where established designs, processes or assumptions are creating unnecessary complexity, cost or operational constraints, then working back from first principles to develop a better solution.

​

This combination of analytical engineering and systems thinking has made Joe particularly effective on unusual, complex or poorly defined problems where there may not be an obvious off-the-shelf answer.

 

Rather than simply applying an existing solution, his approach is to understand why something works the way it does, question whether it needs to, and determine whether there is a simpler, safer or more effective way of achieving the required outcome.

Joe has worked across mining, oil and gas, defence, manufacturing, construction, energy and infrastructure, transport, amusement rides, food processing and agriculture.

 

This breadth of experience gives him a strong understanding of how engineering decisions interact with fabrication, operation, maintenance, compliance and the practical requirements of the people ultimately using the equipment.

As Principal Engineer at Black Square Engineering, Joe is involved in front-end engineering and the technical direction of projects, particularly where complex mechanical or structural problems benefit from early engineering input.

 

He also works closely with clients to define project requirements, identify practical engineering solutions and ensure the appropriate technical and regulatory requirements are addressed.

In addition to his engineering responsibilities, Joe oversees client relationships, engineering staff and the broader operations of Black Square Engineering.
